JOHN Laing was founded 172 years ago in Carlisle, Cumbria. It is a name that still stands tall today. Despite its construction arm being sold to ward off financial ruin in 2001, the Laing name was retained in the combined company Laing O'Rourke. it may have been sold for just £1, but the history of John Laing & Sons before this is incredibly rich. Construction companies are knitted tightly to the societies they build for and Laing's history reflects two world wars and the reconstruction efforts that followed them; developing technologies and energy sources; and changing cultures and the religions that support them.
