Embedded passives (EP) technology is nothing new. It has been available since the 1970s in the form of embedded resistors. EP was long regarded as a technology that's expensive and difficult to design and manufacture, something only the defense industry would use—and for decades it was! Today, the technical and business requirements of the consumer market force companies to explore any and all opportunities to increase product performance, reduce product size and lower product cost. As a result, EP is now seen as one of the advanced component technologies capable of achieving those goals. It's easy to understand why the world market for passive components is currently in the range of $800 billion.
