Prognostics and health management (PHM) is a method that permits the assessment of the reliability of a product or system under its actual application conditions. Assessing the extent of deviation or degradation from an expected normal operating condition (i.e., health) and then estimating the remaining life (prognostics) of electronic products can be used to meet several critical goals. These include: 1) advance warning of failures; 2) minimizing unscheduled maintenance, extending maintenance cycles, and maintaining effectiveness through timely repair actions; 3) reducing the lifecycle cost of equipment by decreasing inspection costs, downtime, and inventory; and 4) improving qualification and assisting in the design and logistical support of fielded and future products.
