Q: How can I calculate the maximum current that can be run through an induction coil? I am interested in using coils as electromagnets imbedded into the flexible circuit board.rnA: There are two distinct types of coils that can be embedded in a flex circuit: wire wound and etched. Since they are very different in the way they are built and function, I will discuss each one individually.rnAn etched coil, as the name implies, is simply a spiral pattern that is etched from the same base copper as the other conductors on the circuit. Since the coil features are photo-defined and etched, there is virtually no limit to the variations you can create. The coil shape can be round, oval, or rectangular, and the size can be as large as the processing panel to as small as the smallest features your flex manufacturer can define.
