Troubling Road Ahead With EU RoHS Directive

The European Union Restriction on Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive has already had a tremendous, paradigm-shifting effect on the electronics industry. While industry is still adjusting to the technical challenges of RoHS, the EU is busy working on RoHS II. In early December, the European Union (EU) Commission released proposed revisions to the RoHS Directive. While some of the proposed revisions could be considered an improvement, many more are troubling. Even more alarming, the Green Party has been appointed a rapporteur to lead the revisions process in the European Parliament. A number of Green Party goals, including the restriction of additional substances, further restriction of exemptions, and additional enforcement procedures could all be offered as amendments. IPC has already begun a vigorous lobbying campaign to represent our members' interests. Brace yourselves, its going to be a bumpy ride!
