I have used medical devices a number of times in past columns as an example of the opportunities that exist in the printed circuit board industry. As a segment of the biomedical industry, the medical device and equipment sector has been credited with exemplifying the goal of its entire industry-the fusion of engineering and biomedical science-and accounts for 40 percent of the biomedical industry's production.rnSince 2002, medical device manufacturing exceeded $70 billion and enjoyed 6 percent annual growth. However, like seemingly every business on the planet, it has been affected by the recession. Although it has lost jobs and currently does not enjoy the same robust growth it once did, the medical device manufacturing segment, as well as the entire biomedical industry, remains important.
