William Inboden has made a signal contribution to Cold War history and tonpost-1945 American religious history. This well-written and impressivelynresearched work convincingly documents the centrality of religion in shapingninterpretations of the Cold War’s meaning by U.S. leaders, not onlynecclesiastical ﬁgures, but also top policymakers, especially PresidentsnTruman and Eisenhower and Secretary of State John Foster Dulles. (AsnInboden acknowledges, Dean Acheson is notably absent.)
