Though previous scholarship has already shown that a significant number ofnChristians in the Third Reich embraced Nazism, Derek Hastings breaks newnground by demonstrating that völkisch Catholics in and around Munichnplayed an essential role in the origin and establishment of the Nazi Partynduring the early 1920s. Not only did believing Catholics join the NationalnSocialist German Workers Party (NSDAP), they also made substantialncontributions to the party’s ideology and the vocabulary with which it wasnexpressed. Furthermore, their support helped the party present itself as anlegitimate option for religious Catholics.
