Darwin, in his retiring years, conducted long-term studies at home on various modes of the movement of ordinary plant organs and sensitive floral parts, in climbing and twining plants, and in insectivorous plants. His conclusions derived therefrom laid emphasis on the fundamental similarity in irritability between plant and animal species, thereby supporting bis theory of the biological evolution. Since then, Darwin's correct judgment in phototropism of coleoptile that there must exist some sort of signal transmission between the site of stimulus perception and that of curvature response has led to the epoch-making discovery of the plant hormone, auxin. On the other hand, he proposed that the electrical wave transmission should be involved to execute the initial rapid thigmotropic movement of Passiflora tendril, which had been well established in animal nerve-muscle preparations and detected in the acting fly-trap of the plant Dionea by Burden-Sanderson. His proposal, however, met strong opposition from his contemporary authorities and has remained unsettled ever since.
