The reaction of excited molecules and free radicals plays an important role in atmospheric chemistry, chemical laser and combustion process. The energy transfer reaction of metastable molecules N_2(A), CO (a) with diatomic molecules or free radicals has been paid great attention to for several years. However, the energy transfer reaction of CO(a) has not been extensively studied because of the difficulty in producing CO (a) with high concentration. Taylor and Setser investigated the energy transfer process of CO(a) with NO and measured the reaction rate constant on flowing afterglow (FA) apparatus. Ottinger et al. studied the same reaction on beam-gas apparatus. In that work, CO~+ ions beam was directed into the NO gas in the target gas chamber. Itwas considered that CO(a) molecules were produced by near-resonant charge transfer of CO~+ with NO, and then the energy transfer of CO (a) to NO occurred. In fact, the emission of CO (a) has not been observed. In this-note, the energy transfer reaction of CO (a) with NO was investigated under single-collision condition by producing an intensive metastable CO(a) molecules beam, and the rovibrational spectra were recorded. The nascent rovibratinal distribution of NO(A) was obtained by means of computer simulation as well.
