Direct Vision Intracardiac Surgery in Man Using a Simple, Disposable Artificial Oxygenator

It has been long recognized that the successful curative treatment ofncertain congenital malformations and acquired diseases of the heart innman would require an effective method for performing reparative surgerynin the open heart under direct vision.nThe advent of controlled cross circulation as a successful method forntotally by-passing the heart and lungs in man1’ 2 has removed the barriernto intracardiac corrective surgery for many of these congenital defectsnof the heart heretofore considered inoperable or subjects for palliativenprocedures only. The malformations which have been successfully correctednby open cardiotomy during the interval while the heart and lungs werentotally by-passed using a donor circulation are: ventricular septal defects,natrioventricularis communis, isolated infundibular pulmonic stenosis, tet-nralogy of Fallot, and pentalogy of Fallot defects.3’
