BFR international symposia: Now expanded to also include phosphorus-based and other flame retardants

This special issue of Chemosphere includes a selection of papers from the scientific presentations at the Sixth International Symposium on Flame Retardants (BFR2013), which was held in San Francisco in April 2013. By coincidence, BFR2013 took place in California at a time when that State's Flammability Standard (TB117, that has been driving the use of flame retardants in consumer products) was under revision and a lot of scientists, policy makers, industry, NGOs and regulators were following closely the debate. For this reason, in addition to the usual Symposium Sessions on Chemical Analysis, Toxicology, Epidemiology and Measurements in Biotic and Abiotic Systems, BFR2013 included a Policy Session and a Closing Panel to bridge the world of science with that of policy.
