Raman Microscopy: Application to the Identification of Pigments on Medieval Manuscripts

Our cultural heritage is intimately connected with writings and art, the analysis and interpretation of which embraces many disciplines within the Arts and Sciences. The identification of the materials used in the production of artefacts, viz. the pigments, binders, etc., and the techniques for the construction of paintings and manuscripts have long been matters of great importance. Not infrequently, such findings have provided insight into developments in chemical technology, in commerce, in trading routes, and in the spread of knowledge from country to country. As in all branches of chemistry, the techniques of analytical chemistry have seen great advances over the past few decades and those appropriate to the identification of pigments have been no exception in this regard.
