Organometallic chemistry is a field of chemistry that is for the most part man-made. It deals not so much with naturally occurring substances but rather compounds that were synthesized by serendipity or by creative extrapolation from that which was already established. Organometallic chemistry is now a subdiscipline of chemistry that has made a strong impact in the synthesis of organic molecules ranging from stoichiometric transformations aimed at the exotic to catalysis of the mundane, as in the Monsanto acetic acid synthesis employing rhodium, one of the world's most expensive metals.
