Interactions between surfaces and proteins are of great importance throughout nature. The earliest life forms may have begun through the ordered assembly of molecules at the surfaces of minerals, and the attachment and detachment of proteins play a key role in embryogenesis and the regulation of metabolism, including control of disease and repair of tissue damage (e.g. blood clotting); aberrant adsorption is responsible for many clinical disorders.
