In the recent years, there has been increasing interest in the synthesis of proteinogenic and non-proteinogenic amino acids. This is due to the wide utility of such compounds as components of proteins, peptides and as starting materials for the synthesis of naturally occurring biologically active compounds. α-Amino acids are the most abundant in this class of compounds, as they are the main components of peptides, enzymes and proteins, and they have been utilised as chiral reagents for a variety of synthetic applications. β- and γ-amino acids, although less abundant than their α-analogues, are also present in peptides, and in the free form they show interesting pharmacological effects.
