The separation of suspensions is a production process that has come into widespread use in many branches of industry. The equipment used for this process should therefore be effective and highly productive, reliable, and long-lived. Self-regenerating filters (Fig. 1) consisting of cylindrical housing 4 with cylindrical filtering element 3 mounted coaxially within the housing are classed with this type of equipment. The initial suspension is fed and the dried product discharged tangentially through branch pipes 2 and 1; a stable rotating flow of liquid is therefore formed in the housing. As a result, the greater part of the solid particles is repelled to the walls of the housing, and the clarified liquid in the central portion of the vessel is subjected to filtration. The rotating flow of liquid simultaneously flushes the cake forming on the inner surface of the filtering element, regenerating the latter. The clean liquid is discharged via branch pipe 5.
