Chemical engineers and other researchers here and abroad are taking another look at using solar cells to meet on-going 'energy needs. Although photovoltaics using amorphous silicon have been available since the late 1960s and have been successful in applications such as calculators, cost considerations, manufacturing techniques, and continued depressed prices for fossil fuels have dampened interest in solar cell research.
