In recent years, the increased stringency of emission-control requirements and the steady drive to reduce operating and maintenance costs have placed significantly greater demands on mechanical seals. In response, the mechanical seal industry has introduced gas-barrier seals. Gas-barrier seals represent a major advance in mechanical sealing technology, offering the advantages of: 1. superior emissions control; 2. minimized product contamination; and 3. reduced installation, operating, and maintenance costs. Consequently, gas-barrier seals are gaining increased acceptance among industrial users. A comparison of conventional seals with gas-barrier types shows why (Table 1). The first sidebar details the situations where gas-barrier seals are preferred.
