In the thermal design of shell-and-tube heat exchangers, calculations are performed separately for the shellside and the tube-side, and the results are then merged to produce a design. Whereas the tubeside calculations are relatively straightforward, the shellside calculations are much more complex and require a good understanding of the intricacies involved. Of the various shellside parameters, baffling is the most crucial. This article will help the designer select the best baffling so as to produce an optimum heat exchanger design.
