Should Europe imitate the U.S. economic model? This European economist answers with a definitive no. The idea of Europe is alive and well, but it requires serious public investment. Europe is in crisis. Since the French and the Dutch rejected the European Union Constitutional Treaty in May and June 2005, the dream of a political and social Europe seems to have disintegrated. Whereas it is disturbing enough that Europeans have given up on the dream, it is even more worrisome that the hopes of non-Europeans in the European social model are now fading.
