The severe recession and remarkable credit crisis of the past year have called into serious question what economists should be responsible for and to whom. Few in the profession warned about how severe a crisis the economy's dependency on debt could create. Even those who saw that parts of the financial and economic system were in jeopardy did not see how all-encompassing the crisis could be.
