Many Americans breathed a sigh of relief when Barack Obama swept to victory in this month's elections, none more deeply than Robert Kutt-ner. Like many voters, the cofounder of the American Prospect felt there was a lot at stake for the country at this juncture in its history. One thing set him apart: Kuttner had just published a book that presumed Obama would be America's forty-fourth president. Obama's Challenge flutters between admiration and skepticism, yet largely gives the president-elect the benefit of the doubt. It is ultimately a wish list, a plea to Obama that he buck the modern-day Democrats' tendency to meet Republican ideology in the middle, and err on the side of true progressive conviction.
