My Economic Education

A former economist tells about his conversion. He is now a sociologist.rnWell-known economists (e.g., Greg Mankiw, Alan Blinder) are revising their introductory textbooks, reports The Economist (April 3, 2010). That development led me to chart my economic education. It began at an early age. My father's elderly Aunt Sadie would ask him to read the small print of the stock market pages and tell her whether she had gained or lost a dollar or so. At the age of five or six, I found this very puzzling. I knew that people made and sold things in order to make money.
