Jobs are not coming back in the United States nearly as rapidly as necessary since the credit crisis of 2008, and the country may yet face another recession soon. But if a full-scale depression has largely been averted for most workers, the authors of a piece on jobs for this issue, led by Northeastern's Andrew Sum, say it has not for blue-collar workers. For them, it's a full-scale depression, and their jobs are not likely to come back. Hardest hit are young males, particularly African-American males. The adoption of large-scale work and training programs is almost certainly necessary, say the authors. But it is by no means clear that the political will exists for that.
