Nearly 90% of the world's economy is driven by the massive use of fossil fuels. The US spends one-sixth of its gross domestic product on oil alone, without counting the important costs of coal and natural gas, even though its use of oil and the other fossil fuels has progressively decreased since the mid-1970s.
