In the past, one of the most serious problems faced by operators, programmers, and content owners was theft of service and its resultant reduction in revenue. In today's digital age, piracy now represents the theft and mass redistribution of content-the only form of piracy that direcdy attacks the content owners' ability to generate both present and future revenues. For content owners, such as the Hollywood studios, merely cooperating with service operators to decrease theft of service is no longer sufficient; they have been forced to take protective action against these direct attacks on their livelihood. This article addresses the history of piracy, security, and the solution for tomorrow's service models.
