Microsoft is selling Mediaroom, one of its few clear successes outside the PC business, to Ericsson. The acquisition shores up a gaping hole in Ericsson's TV product portfolio. Its own middleware product had about a 1 percent market share; Mediaroom is estimated to have 22 percent of the market. Microsoft stuck with Mediaroom, eventually overcoming skepticism to build the operation into a valuable asset. In recent months, however, Microsoft executives began making public statements suggesting that despite its success, it had ceased to be a strategic business for the company, especially in light of the success of the Xbox.
