A restart of serial production of the An-124 freighter is now in the hands of the Russian government. Moscow-based VOLGA-DNEPR GROUP (VDG, parent of outsize and heavylift carrier Volga-Dnepr Airlines) has been lobbying for some time to have a modernized version of the giant freighter made available, but admits it has taken the process as far as it can. VDG has committed to ordering a minimum of ten units, and other carriers have signed up for a total of at least eighteen more, but this falls short of the number needed to reach break-even. Dennis Gliznoutsa, VDG's Group Commercial Director, told Cargo Facts that another 14-to-16 orders were required, and that the only source for such an order would be the Russian government, which would use the freighters to augment its existing fleet of An-124s in military use.
