DEMAND FOR NEW-BUILD WIDEBODY FREIGHTERS INCREASES, WHILE CONVERSIONS LAG

While some of the new-build freighter orders discussed in the "Carrier News" section on p. 4 are not really new - some are just identification of previously undisclosed customers - the last month has been marked by a surge in interest in new-build widebody freighters. The chart at right shows the current picture including both firm orders, and orders that are almost certain to become firm. (These include the five 777Fs for which Lufthansa Cargo has Board approval to buy, the six 777Fs included in the Hainan Air Group MoU, and the fifteen 777Fs that FedEx has ordered contingent on there being no change in the governance of its labor relations). In addition, the chart shows two of the five 777Fs originally ordered by Air France, but bought from that carrier on delivery by FedEx as if they had been ordered by FedEx in the first place.
