Visa International has opened up what it hopes will become a new front in Asia for contact less payment, with its VisapayWave application running on a new credit card issued by Singapore's United Overseas Bank. UOB has introduced the "One Card," which allows users to make purchases of up to S$700 (US$66.32) by tapping or waving the card over readers. Japanese banks and credit card companies had issued nearly 38 million Visa-branded smart cards that carried payment applications complying with the EMV standard as of the end of March, Visa International's Asia-Pacific branch announced last month. That makes Japan the country with the largest number of EMV cards on issue in the region and represented about 40% of Visa's card base in Japan.
