NFC Developers Announce Fees

Makers of mobile phones and other consumer devices supporting Near Field Communication technology would have to pay up to 49 cents per device they ship under a licensing-fee program announced in June. Three companies that claim essential patents on NFC launched the licensing scheme, which other developers of the short-range wireless technology may join later. NFC enables mobile phones to imitate contactless payment or transit cards and also to serve as contactless readers. It is a fair reward to companies that invested immensely in development of the NFC standard, Helene Jay, director of business development in Europe for US-based Via Licensing Corp., said. Via is managing the licensing program for patent holders NXP Semiconductors of the Netherlands, Inside Contactless of France and France Telecom.
