Emergency Workers To Receive Chip Card IDs

When disasters occur, officials securing the scene need to be able to quickly verify that people showing up to help are qualified and legitimate. Police officers, fire fighters, paramedics, doctors, utility and telecommunication personnel may all arrive at a disaster, but how can you tell they are who they say they are and that they are qualified to do what they claim? The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is now planning on issuing 200,000 smart card credentials to state and local emergency workers in and around the Washington, D.C., area to help meet this need, according to Craig Wilson, first responder partnership coordinator for the National Capital Region. Issuance of the new IDs will begin in mid-January.
