Two articles in this issue illustrate new ways consumers are using smart cards in Europe for online security and convenience. It seems to me they suggest opportunities for the smart card-resistant United States. The cover story reports on several European banks that are issuing American Express-branded credit cards and promoting a card application called IDKeeper. IDKeeper makes using the Internet more convenient by storing user names and passwords as well as billing and shipping information.
