China's massive mobile market will grow by another 68 million subscriber accounts in 2005, topping 400 million by the end of the year, according to the Chinese government. If the projection pans out, China's subscriber base will be 20% larger by the end of 2005 and reach an overall penetration of 30%. The country's two large mobile network operators, China Mobile and China Unicom, had 334 million subscriber accounts between them at the end of last year. There were fewer actual mobile phone users at year-end, estimates Beijing-based analyst firm BDA China, which figures each subscriber had 1.4 accounts (or 1.4 SIM cards) during the year. The Chinese market expanded by about 23% in 2004, according to the figures from the Ministry of Information Industry, or MII.
