Ten miles of Grantham Canal open by 2007?

The Grantham Canal Partnership hopes to have a 10 mile section of the canal from just west of Grantham restored and open within two years. With the three Woolsthorpe Locks (Locks 16 to 18) restored in the 1990s, completing the ten-mile section from the A1 road blockage near Grantham to Redmile only requires the restoration of the Stenwith Locks (12 to 15), and two farm accommodation bridges. This will give what the partnership believes will be a very attractive and viable 10-mile cruising section, with excellent view of Belvoir Castle. For the longer term, the Partnership is attempting to establish how the canal can be restored at both ends. As a result of funding from British Waterways and the Local Authorities a Project Manager will be able to be appointed for an initial 18 months, and it is expected that further funding will be obtained to continue the appointment for further years.
