Bradford Canal

Industrial Yorkshire's waterway system was based largely around its rivers: the Aire, Ouse, Don, Calder converging on the Humber estuary. In conjunction with the trans-Pennine canals these routes kept the county's industries going. Today, although modern freight barges still carry considerable tonnages, much of the system has been turned over to leisure traffic - and urban waterside regeneration schemes are replacing ex-industrial dereliction in the city centres of Leeds, Sheffield and Wakefield. But one the West Riding's cities has missed out on all this - Bradford has neither a major river nor a connecting canal to help its regeneration.
