Sometimes, the shortcomings of one machine on a busy packaging line can be traced directly to the inadequacies of the machinery just in front of it. That is what happened recently at the meatpacking operations of Canadian grocery giant Metro Richelieu in Montreal and Toronto, which were struggling to find a reliable and effective way to apply date-codes on vacuum-packs of meat shipped from these plants to the 579 retail outlets operated by Metro in Quebec and Ontario.
