It's an open secret: A company's future hinges mainly on its human capital. An employer who finds that rare gem who can help increase profit must consider offering that employee the opportunity to participate in a stock plan, especially when a pat on the back and the annual bonus lose their appeal. Employee stock plans must be seriously considered if an enterprise wants to attract and retain key employees. There are the traditional recognition methods, such as the sale or subscription of shares (with or without freeze) and original methods such as the four main Canadian stock plans: stock option plans; share purchase plans; phantom stock plans; and stock bonus plans.
