Sobey opened a meat-delivery business in the coal-mining town of Stellarton, NS, which continues to be the home of the multibillion-dollar Sobey family holdings. But a month before the May 24 kickoff for Sobeys 100th anniversary celebrations (J. W.'s birthday), the family's public holding company, Empire Co. Ltd., announced a $1.06-billion bid for the 28% of Sobeys Inc. shares Empire didn't own.
