On Jan. 16, General Electric Co. announced a $6.2 billion charge stemming from shortfalls in a legacy long-term-care insurance business. As a result, Chief Executive Officer John Flannery again faced questions about the industrial conglomerate's ultimate structure. In his strongest wording yet, he said GE would entertain a corporate split that would see some of its main divisions-health care, aviation, and power-becoming separately traded entities.
