摘要

It is argued that self-actualisation should be understood in terms of individuals' potential for moral thought and action. The use of the concept in theories of work-motivation and job-design is then considered. Despite Maslow's recognition of the moral dimension, management theorists have, in effect, tended to operationalise the concept such that the possibility of employees' critical moral evaluation of their work is denied. Such evaluation, and the motivational consequences, are not necessarily dependent on any objectively observable job characteristics. The implications for theory and practice, in terms of individual moral development, should be recognised.
