Robert Litan wrote this book for a number of reasons. One is that the financial crisis and its aftermath showed a misunderstanding by the media and other noneconomists of what economists mainly do. Another is that businesspeople give too little credit to contributions of economists. A third is that he is following the path created by the popularity of the 2005 book Freakonomics, by Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner. Freakonomics introduced a wide audience to economic thinking applied to nontradi-tional topics. Trillion Dollar Economists is similarly written for a wide audience.
