摘要

As Rome reintroduces trolleybuses after 33 years, our columnist reflects on a contrasting British dalliance with bread vans. I think I may need to ask our illustrious editor to change the title of this column to 'Under the Wires' as I have yet another trolleybus picture for you this month, and I'm sure my old friend BC will not resist the temptation to mention the 'silent servant' again next month. It's another Solaris Trollino, but this time an 18m articulated one — in Rome, where trolleys ran from January 1937 until July 1972, just three-and-a-bit months after the UK's last in Bradford). And now — or rather since 23 March this year — they're back. Like their shorter cousins, the Landskrona girls, these 30 vehicles are fitted with batteries that enable off-wire operation at full line speed, even with a full load — a condition precedent in the Eternal City, where all buses appear to be jam-packed for 18 hours a day.
