Dumfries & Galloway is Scotland's southernmost region, covering over 2,000 square miles and stretching from the Irish Sea in the west to Eskdale in the east. Its two main centres of population, Dumfries and Stranraer, are nearly 70 miles apart and are the only towns in the region with over 10,000 inhabitants. Of about 80 bus services on the D&G-produced map, roughly 75% are completely tendered but, unlike some English counties, that is not an excuse for poor service provision and the council's publicity also reflects a strong commitment to public transport.
