Solingen buys Swiss to replace old MAN fleet

The German city of Solingen has placed a £7.5million order with Hess of Switzerland for 15 Swisstrolley3 articulated trolleybuses to replace its 1985/86 MAN SL172 HO six-wheelers. The new buses, with Vossloh Kiepe electrics, are due to arrive between October 2008 and April 2009. Stadtwerke Solingen (SWS) received six submissions for a tender put out in the summer, and has specified the three-axle Swisstrolley3s with two electric motors driving the rear and centre rnaxles, and a powerful low-emission auxiliary diesel engine. Similar vehicles operate in Zurich and Geneva, which also have double articulated versions.
