Greater Manchester starts campaign for C-charge public transport expansion

The Association of Greater Manchester Authorities has begun its difficult campaign to persuade motorists to accept a peak hour congestion charge in return for E2.8billion of bus, tram and train expansion in the conurbation. The government has agreed in principle to the scheme (Buses last month), which AGMA says would bring 50 years' worth of public transport investment in one hit, ￡1.2billion of it from the congestion charge. Bus improvements include the re-establishment of commuter express services across the conurbation and the introduction of 120 yellow schoolbuses to discourage peak hour car use.
