The Big Lemon runs out of juice

The Big Lemon, the community interest company that started competing on one of Brighton & Hove's routes on 1 September, abruptly ceased operations on 30 November. In a statement on its website, managing director Tom Druitt blamed the closure on 'a situation beyond our control' and personally undertook to refund any unexpired weekly tickets or six-journey passes. He subsequently explained that the company had been unable to attract enough passengers on to its half-hourly Falmer-Brighton Station service to break even, but he had intended to keep it going until Christmas. However, several drivers left as soon as this was announced.
