EU ruling suggests Combus deal could cost Arriva

Arriva could face a huge bill for subsidies paid to the former state-owned Danish undertaking Combus before it bought the ailing company eight years ago. This was revealed after a lengthy European Commission probe in Brussels.rnAfter a series of tender miscalculations, Combus received a total of DKr470million (£54million) from the Danish state in 1999 and 2000 to try and stave off insolvency. Combus was sold to Arriva in January 2001 as a going concern for a token DKr 100 (£11). Arriva entered the Danish market when it bought Unibus in 1997 and is now Denmark's largest bus operator.
