In 19571 was offered an apprenticeship with Thomas Harrington, the Hove coachbuilder. After a lot of thought, I dedded it would probably be more beneficial to stay on at school for another couple of years and improve my qualifications. So in 19591 was accepted on Southdown Motor Services' three-year management training scheme. I was given my free pass enabling me to travel to and from work and my privilege ticket or 'priv providing quarter fare travel at other times. My starting wage was £5.10.0d (£5.50) perweek and on Monday 19 August I reported to the cashier's office in Pool Valley, Brighton. There were about half a dozen people in the office. Conductors paid in at one of the small windows and one of the cashiers counted their cash and ensured it tallied with the waybill. The waybill and ticket machine was then passed to the clerks, me included, for checking. The conductor would record the number from his Setright ticket machine at the beginning and end of each journey.
